Laptop specifications

Hi all,

I’m looking at the HP ZBook for Rhino 7. I’d like to get your thoughts on some specs:

  1. Does the 12th generation intel processor offer better performance for Rhino over the 11th gen.

  2. Is the NVIDIA RTX A1000 video card well suited.

  3. Is 16GB ram sufficient, or will 32 be much better.

Thank you!

processor is not super important anymore. The performance differences in most modern processors are so minimal you’d be hard pressed to notice any differences unless you timed things with a stopwatch.

I’d save money on processor and spend money on graphics card and RAM. Rendering in rhino is Cuda enabled, so I always recommend Get as much vram and as many cuda cores as you can afford. More = better faster for rendering. Make sure you have at least 4gb vram per monitor you plan on using. 1 monitor 4gb vram min, 2 monitors 8gb vram and so on.

I’d go with a cheaper processor and buy more system RAM, 32 gb will keep you happy, 64 is even better. 16 is not enough IMO.

Thanks @theoutside that makes sense. The ZBook I was considering has an Intel (12th gen) i9, 32GB memory, 4GB RTX A1000 graphics
and a UHD display.

There are some 11th gen ZBooks within a similar budget with an RTX 2000 and another with Quadro T1200, both with 4GB but they compromise with FHD displays.

Do you think these graphics cards will deliver much better then the A1000 considering I mostly 3D model? Of course, I’d like to be able to have real-time rendering in viewport also!

I’m so used to a UHD display on my Dell Precision and feel I’ll notice downgrading to a lower res display…

Also, what’s your view on using Macs for Rhino? M1 chips etc. …

Thanks!

IMO, RTX or RTX A are the better card over the quadro T120.

If you can bump to an 8gb vram card that will give you more CUDA cores for rendering and the option of using an external monitor.

32gm of ram will be fine, unless you do huge models, but ram is cheap and I always recommend jamming in as much as you can afford.

Fwiw, I personally use machines from Titan computing or Boxx. They tend to have much more opportunity to customize and “know” 3d more than dell, hp, etc…
(note this is not an mcneel endorsement, but my own personal opinion)

Thanks Kyle @theoutside

I ended up going for the ZBook… Let’s see how the RTX A1000 performs!

I’ll let you know.

Kyle, I am in the market for a new laptop. I normally go with Dell, but am tempted by Titan or Boxx. Pricing and support-wise, how do those companies compare to Dell? I am aiming for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti/16GB graphics, 1TB storage and 32GB memory. Would love a 17" screen, but I can get by with a 14-15" given I use 2x external monitors when at my office and on-site work can probably survive with a smaller monitor.

pricing, typically a bit more, support is head and shoulders-different-planet better.

Speaking strictly Personally and not at all an official mcneel endorsement, I won’t use any of the off the self companies/ Boxx and titan and many other custom builders are worth the extra money in my experience.
