Joinery Problem

Hi Guys, I want to create a joinery similar to the yellow one shown in the image. I have multiple sticks whose axes intersect at a single point, each with different angles and rotations. I have tried it with the following commands: BlendSrf, NetworkSrf, Sweep1, BlendCrv, and MultiPipe – all without success.

120Sticks.3dm (9.1 MB)

I think it will be very challenging to get nice looking joints with these constraints. I wonder what your end goal is with this. Does it need to be manufactured?
There are some tools to do this a little easier with Rhino 8/9 but it will still be a lot of work I’m afraid. A hybrid of Multipipe / SubdCrease comes to mind.

Didn’t realise it was recording sound

Hi Gijs, I want to Print the the Joints. In total there is about 50 Joints. I thought there maybe there is a fast and easy way to generate these Joints.

Thanks Quan Li! It looks like it might help

maybe you should optimise the rotation of the sticks first.

…an alternative would be pipes / cylinders instead of squared profiles.

also think about not using the centerline but the top surface axis / mid of the bars to meet in one point.

kind regards - tom

I will try doing that, but the Profil must be a square. The Sticks are given. We have about 600 of them just laying around

subd might be a nice option as well.

regarding the geometry you might benefit from the follow concept:

  • define a normal / plane for each corner / knot.
  • do a planar polygon (green)
  • the axis of the top surface from each stick start/end from polygon-segement-midpoint (red)
  • think about doing a convex only overall shape / design

if you want be lazy build a regular structure … Icosahedron or some Fuller’s Bucky Balls…
