Join command broke history but history's disabled?

I never use history so why do I occasionally get this error?

Hi Mark,
The Join command is one of many that is not history enabled. See the caution note in the help file.

The question is, I never enable history so why do I get the error occasionally?

Sorry about that - I read “enabled”.

Dimensions are always history-enabled by default
You can turn this off by running the History command and setting the RecordAnnotationHistory option to No.
