Issues with exporting STL file as a SKP file

Hello, I’m having some problems exporting an imported STL file from Rhino as a SketchUp file.

Every time I export the STL file as SKP, I get geometry issues as shown in the images and would like to know if there is any way I can export as SKP without these issues.

The SKP file was created by selecting Large Objects Millimetres Template then selecting Hectometers and then ticking all boxes during export.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could solve this issue for me.

Hi Brandon -

How big are your objects? It sounds like you should start with a template in meters…

At any rate, …

None of your images show what type of geometry issues arise. Please post a 3dm file that can be used to troubleshoot this issue.

Here is the 3dm file

Here are the images of the geometry issues I get when exporting the imported STL as SKP.

Can you supply the STL before you imported it into Rhino?
What application created the STL?

From what I can see, it appears the STL is the problem, rather than the SKP export from Rhino.

EDIT after checking the tolerances in your Rhino file, try setting it to 0.0001 meters instead of 0.01 meters (as in your file) BEFORE you import the STL. Then try importing the STL and exporting to SKP again.

The STL file was created in Fusion 360

Hi Brandon -

This file is in meters.

I find it somewhat hard to imagine that this object is supposed to be around 4 meters by 10 meters by 5 meters…
Note that the STL file format is unitless. You should probably select “Millimeters” when importing the STL file?

At any rate…

  • The STL looks fine when imported into Rhino.
  • Doesn’t SketchUp import STL files?

Hello, I’ve fixed the geometry issues in the SketchUp drawing by double clicking on one of the lines in the drawing which then shows all the lines which I can then smoothen.

But now when I open the same drawing in SketchUp Viewer, I get these grey side bars on each side which I find a nuisance.

Hi Brandon -

For issues with SketchUp products, you will need to find a SketchUp forum.
