Introducing Cyclops: Real-Time Raytracing for Sustainable Design 🧩

Hi all! We are happy to announce that after years of development, Cyclops - a raytracing analysis tool by Foster + Partners - is now officially available to everyone. :globe_showing_europe_africa:

The development of Cyclops is driven by Foster + Partners’ commitment to sustainability. It is being released as a free plugin for Grasshopper to encourage widespread adoption and the integration of more sustainable design practices across the industry.

Realtime analysis

Cyclops speeds up raytracing based environmental analysis using NVIDIA GPUs, enabling real-time feedback for metrics such as radiation, sunlight hours, daylight and sky component.

Optimisation

Cyclops also offers a minimal update workflow using scenes where static data like geometries can be retained between analyses. This reduces computational overhead and together with the performance gains from running on the GPU, Cyclops becomes ideal for optimization workflows and iterative processes.

Scale

Cyclops is built to efficiently handle geometry and can run analysis on highly detailed models containing large amounts of data, such as those used in city-scale contexts. Since Cyclops primarily works with meshes, it efficiently processes dense and complex geometries while maintaining consistent analysis performance. Even with highly detailed models, the software ensures fast and reliable results without significant performance impact.

The plugin is developed by Foster + Partners’ Applied R+D Team, an integrated team of architects, engineers, data scientists and software developers. It is available for Rhino 7 & Rhino 8 via Package Manager/Food4Rhino with a 90 day update requirement (similar to Rhino WIP builds).

I played around with this plugin a bit and I have to admit that it is indeed very fast and also pleasant to use. Could you write something more about the license?

From what I understand, it is free to use as long as you allow me. Could this plugin become paid in the future in the form of a subscription or a one-time fee? I assume your intentions are fair, but in the software world disappointments regarding changes in the way of licensing are common. It would be nice to clarify these doubts from the very beginning.

In any case, congratulations on a very cool tool and thanks for sharing!

Hi Jakub,

Glad to hear you’re enjoying Cyclops! All current features will always stay free and accessible.

The plugin runs on a 90-day renewable license to help catch bugs early and keep things stable while we’re still in early days. We release builds regularly — each new build also comes with its own 90-day validity. Rhino 8 users with auto-updates on will get them automatically. In Rhino 7 or with auto-updates off, just use the Package Manager to update manually. In the future, we may adjust the expiry period.

Let me know if anything’s unclear!

Best,
Wojciech

So, not Mac compatible. :slightly_frowning_face:

Hi ray,

Unfortunately no Mac support.

We rely heavily on a few Nvidia libraries as well as some Windows ones so Cyclops does require that you have an Nvidia GPU and run on Windows.
