Insight to layouts functionality. (Compared to SketchUp)

Hi, im hoping to get some insight into layouts. I’ve been an employed architect for about 10 years, and im about to start my own practice. In my previous office i’ve worked primarily in archicad and sketchup. When studying i used Rhino for pretty much everything. I really enjoy the software and would like to incorporate it to my workflow again.

However there is one thing that i cant quite get my head around and that is the amount of effort required to have my project (interior or full house build) connected to layouts. What im looking for is to have several views (Named views?) with different layerstates and viewtype settings directly connected to my layouts. So that i quickly export PDFs as the project progresses. Like views in sketchup or archicad..

Every quarter i’ve looked through the forums to see if there has been an update on this in rhino but from my understanding this is a widely spread request. Is that right? And to you who have been intense rhino users for a long time, how come this has never been developed? It seems strange considering the amount of complex operations that Rhino offers.

Hope to get some further insight into this matter.

All the best!

I’m not fully understanding what it is you need, but compared to SketchUp for layouts, personally Rhino is way ahead.

It might be worth you looking into yes NamedViews, also Snapshots, & NamedPositions

Hej Oskar -

From Rhino 8 onward, there is an extra model space on/off state for layers. Before this change, when you turned off a layer in model space, it was automatically also turned off in all layouts.

From Rhino 8, you can also set layers to be off in future layouts and details. If you then need to show a layer in a detail, you will need to turn it on in the detail when you create it.

When you have set up your details as you want (which, yes, can take time), you should be able to save this layer state and restore it when you have made changes.

I’m not sure if my general answer helps at all. If you ask a more detailed question, I’m sure we can provide more information.
