Inset in GH?

quick question, why is there no inset surface component in GH?

offset Crv and then rebuild the surface back takes some computing times, especially when there are hundreds of surface.

native component should handle it faster or am i wrong?

There is alot of basic functionality missing from Grasshopper. I think it is the Surface+ plug-in that offers the Frame Surface and Inset Surface commands.

There are no “quick” questions (or quick answers).

Use negative ‘D’ (Distance):

I think he means offsetting the surface trim inward by a specific amount in the surface’s UV space, and not offsetting the surface in the surface’s normal direction.

Have you tried offset on surface?

Perhaps, but without posting any geometry or images, who knows? Or cares. He lost me at “quick question”.

and then Split Surface, but it’s unreliable. Frame Surface and Insert Surface work with UV offset only though, so Offset On Srf may be the only way. Copy Trim has similar problems.

If a plug-in that uses Rhino API can do it then probably an Ai chatbot can code it fairly easily.

Sure. All that most of the “+” plug-ins do is expand the Grasshopper core by exposing basic RhinoCommon functionality to it.

How so? Aren’t we getting pretty far from a “quick question/answer”?

In that it fails to split surfaces even in cases where you try to fix the problem by using Pull Curve

Not really.

There is such command in rhinocommon. you can use scripting components for that

This one is a random component Claude made me like a year ago, did not test it.

This got carried away… Most of the code creates a random surface with only the white group using OffsetS (Offset on Surface).

Didnt expect to get alot of reply guys. thanks so much. basically the summary is there is currently no native component to inset except using Offset on Surface component and then rebuild the surface back.

originally i was asking because the inset command is only present in Rhino but not in GH. would be nice to have the inset functionality like @volker suggested on Surface+ plug in. but it still doesnt have the Specified distance input. only 0-1 parameter.

anyway thanks all for the reply!

No need to “rebuild the surface back” as you can just split the surface with the offset curve.
