Hi, I am pleased to share that I recently discovered Bongo and tested it by simulating a radial engine (9 pistons). I am now looking to delve deeper into different types of movements and would like to simulate a camshaft. Could anyone provide some advice? I can share the radial engine model, please feel free to use and share it. Thank you!
Your radial motor model is nicely done, surely for a novice.
It looks like you revealed a bug. The point objects â1â, â2â, etc⌠(on Layer 03) play a significant role in the IK structures but for some reason the are set to âanimation disabledâ.
Nevertheless the IK chain the is working properly. âDisabling animationâ is supposed to temporarily put the object to rest. So this is a bug that the contraint keeps on working!
For that matter, when an object got animated during the making off but its active role has been exhausted, you can use the âRemove animationâ option which will remove all the objectâs animation data and hence clear the AnimationManager. As an alternative the button in the Objectâs Properties panel can be used.
Concerning the Camshaft, there are various solutions.
In Camshaft Phy.3dm (5.5 MB) the power of âPhysicsâ has been deployed. This feature (new in Bongo 3.0) brings along lots of parameters, isnât very self explanatory, has no documentation (yet) and unfortunately still needs quite a lot of elaboration. Have a look and ask for further explanation if needed.
In Camshaft Con IK.3dm (257.2 KB) the benefits of IK are used. The result isnât 100% correct (the Physics solution is), but might suffice in some projects. In Bongo 3.0 the feature âConnectionâ is introduced as an alternative to IK. We hope it is more accessible and user-friendly. As a foretaste I elaborated the IK structure in the model with a Connections version (a Slider and a Grasp).
I sure hope you would like to experiment with Connections.
I forgot to mention⌠an IK-constraint (and a Grasp) can only be applied on a point, curve or surface but not on a polysurface. Thatâs why the cam lobes in the |Camshaft Con IK.3dm| model are pulled apart into 3 different elements thus making the side a single surface.
Also⌠Marika posted here some how-to videos concerning the new Connections feature.
This is amazing! Iâm currently using IK chains because the animation looks smoother. I created the radial motor version using Bongo 3âs physical components, but the animation has some lag. I had no idea I could restrict the connections between open surfaces. Sometimes I encounter a bug while editing the model, The connections or assigned constraints cease to work properly.
Iâm very grateful for the solution. I was previously trying to restrict the point to two lines using constraints âbongo 1â: one vertical and the rotation of the crankshaft, without success, obviously.
Itâs obvious the Work-In-Progress version of Bongo is not production ready and may misbehave, hang or even crash. The team is currently hard at work.
Happy to help, any more questions⌠just fire away.
