I have a cylinder and several curves I generated as tween curves. The tricky part for me is figuring out how to tell the project component the correct direction to project the curves.

You didn’t internalize your geometry.
Try the Pull Component.

Pull Component worked, unless i’m misunderstanding where you are wanting to project to.
Nope, that’s it! I knew it would be way simpler than I was thinking.
I think a big aspect of understanding grasshopper is knowing the variety of components on your disposal, and that’s a process I’m still undergoing.
