How do I model a wall like this for 3d printing with clay? Newbie here in need of a tutorial

Dear Stella,

Also referring to your first question from a couple of days ago. Seems you are starting with two/three things at the same time:

  • Designing in a CAD program (where rhino/grashopper is a good choice  )
  • 3D printing
  • 3D printing in clay.

For getting answers, it is best to cut doingyour question in smaller issues, the more chance there is, you get useful answers.

  • for printing in 3D with clay, this is the best source I could find: Advanced 3D printing with Grasshopper: Clay and FDM. | Food4Rhino If you search on internet you will also find youtube videos, pdfs and more. Most important is, how to use grasshopper in the process.
  • for printing in 3D, (just in case you want to know more and do not have a printer yet). Start with downloading a slicer like Orcaslicer, Prusaslicer. Import an STL and have a look at the previews and see how the layers are build. There are tons of information on this on the internet.
  • Last, but not least, maybe most important: Start drawing/designing. There are great starter/tutorials on the internet. Also for use with Rhino/Grashopper (that is how I started about a year ago. Start with easy stuff like a wall, a hole in the wall. fillets, patterns. etcetara.

While doing so, you will probably run into questions. Upload what you got at that point, and we are happy to advice, help, so you can succesfully end your project.

Thank you so much for your detailed response! I really appreciate the guidance and the resources you shared. You’re absolutely right—breaking things down into smaller steps will help me navigate this process more effectively. I was recently tasked with working on a project that involves 3D printing and using Rhino/Grasshopper for the first time, so I was feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I’ll start by exploring the slicers you mentioned and getting more familiar with Rhino/Grasshopper through simple modeling exercises. The book and other sources you recommended for 3D printing in clay also seem like great starting points—I’ll be sure to check them out.

Thanks again for your help!

Best regards,
Stella
