When making complicated objects, I frequently use a chosen color for wireframes and wireframe layers, and I use a different color and material for tools for performing sequences of Boolean operations. I often save these construction tools, and so if I really mangle the object, I can rebuild it.
Not to impose a standard, but personally, I use blue color for wireframes, like a blueprint theme, and orange for boolean tools like a road-construction theme.
I also use my translucent material coded objects for such things bounding boxes.
