thanks for the quick reply!! hoping for something between A and B pointing outboard… my biggest problem conceptually is isolating the edge from the surface.

in the end I gave up on Rhino’s automatic filleting solutions and resorted to descriptive geometry. the part clearly isn’t as attractive but it’s surely less expensive to make; just two milling operations. I greatly appreciate the help provided and will be less reluctant to use one of the filleting tools next time.
