Get X3D into Rhino?

I uploaded an STL file to Shapeways, and there were issues with certain features being too small for printing. Now, Shapeways has a tool to automatically fix issues. It makes small features thicker. The result can be downloaded, however – unfortunately – in X3D file format, which Rhino doesn’t seem to be capable of importing.

Any recommendations how to get the X3D file into Rhino? Any recommended converter?

@feklee,

download blender, open it and and in the file menu, go to User Preferences. Under Addons tab, enter x3d in the upper left searchbox. The addon comes up, enable it in the upper right (if not already enabled) and click “Save user Settings” in the lower left.

Then try to import your file and export it in a format Rhino can read, eg. *.obj.

@clement Thanks for the suggestion! Just installed Blender:

  1. The plugin is available by default, and enabled.

  2. When I import the file, I get a box, and that’s it.

Any idea what to do?

Quadriga-fixed.zip (88.4 KB)

@feklee,

must be a different x3d flavour which causes that blender does not like it. I´ve been able to import into Meshlab and saved it as obj which Rhino was able to read: Quadriga-fixed.3dm (506.4 KB)

Thanks, @clement! I now also tried my luck with Meshlab. The problem is that the dimensions in the .obj file are wrong. I assume that the .x3d file has correct dimensions for printing and that they are lost when importing into Meshlab. And dimensions are what I would like to investigate…

@feklee,

i´ve noticed too how small this is and thought you want to save material :wink: Pun aside, if you open the X3D in a text editor, there are no dimensions set only NavigationInfo. I was working in mm when i imported it.
