E.57 and PLY Pointclouds loading but not viewable

Hello, I can usually load and view E.57 and Ply Pointcloud files …but I cant at the moment.
I can import them, but not see them. I can select them with a window selection or by using " SelPtCloud".
Any Ideas ?

Hi @stevebaer I’m working in Version 7 SR16 (7.16.22067.13001, 2022-03-08) and I’m not able to import .e57, even tho I have the Plugin enabled. Really interested in how it handles these files, if I can get them in there.

Is there another checkbox I may be missing? Thx

Can we see the e57 file? If it’s large, use our file uploader.

https://www.rhino3d.com/upload

Thanks,

– Dale

uploading via link now, thx

Hi @Alan_Farkas,

I’ve seen a few of these e57 files before - one that havet incomplete headers. Our e57 file reader is pretty strict.

Try this:

1.) Download and install a copy of CloudCompare - it’s free.
2.) Launch CloudCompare and open your file.
3.) Save your file in e57 format.
4.) Open in Rhino.

Let me know if that helps.

– Dale

Yep, that did it, thx.
Think it’s still nec to output a Mesh from Cloud Compare (I’ve been working in that the last couple days) or can I just convert the e57 pointCloud to NUBRS, etc from within Rhino?

I don’t know how you’re going to do this - sorry.

Just use the “Make Model” button…
Just kidding.
It takes quite a bit of skill and practice to made a 3D NURBS model from a Pointcloud using ANY software. I find Rhino to be quite good at this task, but it is a manual process.

This is one approach that I have posted before , it enables you to “Trace” construction /loft lines directly from the pointcloud by slicing through it.

  1. Create a clipping plane
  2. Copy and paste the clipping plane into its original position.
  3. Move the second clipping plane to your desired slice “Thickness” and flip it.
(This should create a thin slice through your cloud etc)
  4. Group the clipping planes so they move as one.
  5. Create a “Mobile Construction Plane”
  6. Attach it to one of the Clipping planes

Now…when you move your clipping planes, the Mobile Construction Plane will follow.
Whatever you draw will be on that mobile construction plane. You can also obviously rotate the construction plane in 3D etc.

You can also Snap the clipping planes to points (in a pointcloud), or to reference objects (lines etc)
using a second viewport that isn’t clipped by the clipping planes.

If you want to be really exact, create a rectangle exactly between the two clipping planes and attach the Mobile Construction plane to that, this is your exact reference plane.

I would highly recommend the Veesus Pointcloud plugin for Rhino, it has several additional tools that Rhino itself doesn’t provide.

Mike
