Double click on file name. Rhino opens then shuts down

Hi Everyone,

I’m having difficulty keeping files open on my HP ZBook. As soon as I double click a file name, it opens then shuts down. This does not happen on my desktop. Nor does it happen to all of the files on my laptop. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Thanks,

Terry

Yes, happened a month or so ago. It was very mysterious, since it just started happening after no obvious action or update on my part. The first thing I tried to do to fix it in fact worked: I went to the Apps & Features Setting (I am using Windows 10), found the Rhino entry, and clicked the “Modify” button. When it brought up the Rhino installer, I clicked the “Repair” button. And to my great astonishment whatever it repaired dealt with the problem, after I did a full system restart. The installer quickly flashed that it was downloading some Microsoft-labeled files…I was panicking too much to note what they were, and now I wish I had. But it seems like some essential Microsoft tool packaged with Rhino had become corrupted, and the installer updated it fixing the problem. I’ve been waiting for it to happen again so I could troubleshoot the issue and keep a better record of what the installer fixed so I could forward the info to McNeel.

Best of luck.

Hi Lewis,

I just tried that but alas…There’s no joy in Mudville tonight. Mine started up a month or so too. Hmmm maybe more folks have been experiencing this. Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

Hi Terry -
For starters, please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.
-wim

Hi Wim,

Here are my System Info results. I tried to open on of the files giving me fits. It still does not open. I’ve tried to open a fresh instance of R7 to open, insert, Import, or attach the file. Rhino closes each time within milliseconds.

I have also added one of the files that us giving me trouble.

I look forward to your findings.

Cheers,

Terry

Your file opens fine here. I also have RhinoCAM (2022 not 2021) and it doesn’t seem to have a problem with it either.

I am on Win 11 (not 10) and I am using a RC version that is a bit later than the release version you are using, but not sure if that matters.

You are able open some other files without a problem?

Thank you for looking into this. I have less than ten 3DM files giving me problems when attempting to open them. The rest of my files open without issue. I use my desktop to do most of my work and the laptop in the evenings when it’s crunch time. The desktop is Win 11. I have R7 and RC2022 on that machine.

I have no problem opening anything on the desktop.

Hmm, OK, I might try temporarily disabling RhinoCAM and RhinoArtFileExplorer on the laptop anyway, close and restart Rhino, and then try opening one or more of the problem files. If they open, the problm is still somehow with RhinoCAM. If they don’t, then we need to look further.

I might also try updating the NVidia video card driver, even though it’s not all that old…

We have had this issue happen at the college where I teach Rhino. Here is the recommended solution:

  • Do not double-click on a file
  • Launch Rhino.
  • Use the File > Open command to get the file you want.

Why do we do this? There may be old versions of Rhino, including some with 32- and 64-bit. We have had certain plug-ins fail (V-Ray 64-bit) when the wrong Rhino was launched. So … launch the right Rhino!

After having two versions of Illustrator (secretly!) on one computer, I do the same thing for all project files.

you may also want to try opening a new blank file, then file>import your problem file. this strips out the render mesh which can cause problems if it has been damaged somehow.
