I wouldn’t wait for progress. It will only disappoint you.
I mean we are getting close to 2 years from a related bug being “assigned to a developer”:
That was April 2023. It’s still on “open” meaning it’s assigned to someone, but there is no ETA.
From experience I would say the average feature request/bug fix takes around 5 years. There are regular Youtrack items from 10 years ago and this whole thread is only 2 months away from its 10 year anniversary.
There is progress in the form of a new feature in Rhino 8 called Autocplane.
It helps with modeling and also with annotation tasks.
When Autocplane is on, pick on a planar surface or planar curve, and the cplane is automatically aligned to the object. See more details in the Help. The command to toggle the setting on and off is AutoAlignCPlane or pick in the Status bar like I do in the video.
To pick on a surface that is part of a polysurface, use subobject selection:
Windows: Shift + Control + Pick
Mac: Shift + Command + Pick
When the cplane is set, create your dimension.
When you are done with Autocplane, turn it off.
It will get in the ways with other tasks when it is not necessary.
Part of the problem is the difference between the Mac and Windows platforms with this command which needs to be reconciled by the developers moving forward.
The developers are discussing and it is open with a 8.x release target.
The testing that was recommended by Steve was between developers.
I received an email from Max Fugier regarding a fix for OneView using the SpaceMouse and I can confirm it works in the latest internal build! There was some real excitement in our office over these news, since we are all devoted SpaceMouse users.
