Dell XPS 15 vs. MacBook Pro 16

Hey guys,

I was using a ThinkPad X1 Extreme G1 until it got stolen a week ago.

Now I have to buy a new machine and I am stuck between a DELL XPS 15 7590 and the new MacBook Pro 16. Of course these are two different machines with totally different OS.

The machines that I am comparing are running very similar components:

  • both are using the Intel Core i7-9 9750H Prozessor, Hexa-Core 2.6 to 4.5 GHz
  • 512GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 GDDR5 4GB for the Dell XPS
  • Radeon Pro 5300M GDDR6 4GB for the MacBook Pro

The difference is, that the MacBook costs 2480 EUR compared to the 2000 EUR for the Dell, which means a 480 EUR increase for - in my point of view - better hardware, like trackpad, a bigger screen, thinner design, better speakers, a better keyboard…

I will probably have to use BootCamp mainly for work with Rhino (depending on how good the Mac version has become and will develop in the future… e.g. V-Ray for Rhino). Will BootCamp significantly worsen the performance of the MBP16?

Any thoughts/advice regarding this comparison? Thanks a lot,

greetings from Stuttgart,

Rudi

You should get the Dell. You get the Mac because you WANT a Mac and you’ll make it work. The decision is really that simple…

And the Dell has an Nvidia card, largely preferable for Rhino.

And V-Ray for Rhino for Mac? By the time it comes out - if it ever does which seems unlikely - you’ll need another new computer.

I travel frequently for business and use a MacBook Pro on the road. I like the design, OS and backup with Time Machine. I used to use Bootcamp for Rhino but found that while it would run Windows apps fine I was constantly rebooting to use something on the other side. I like the convenience of having Rhino available for Mac OS but for serious work I greatly prefer Windows and use Dell workstations at my office and home. If this will be your primary Rhino computer get the Dell.

I don’t think there’s a lot of difference between similarly configured Dells and the MacBook Pro, except for the Mac Mystique. In my limited experience with both brands, I think that in general Dells are more conservatively designed thermally than the MacBooks, but I don’t have experience specific to the two units you are considering.

From your post it sounds like with the Dell you can hit the ground running: nothing will change from your previous experience. With the MacBook you will need to get familiar with the OS (not too big a deal, but real nevertheless), learn the peculiarities of the Mac version of Rhino, pay $800 more for the privilege and end up with a Radeon video card. All us old-timers (oops - I mean experienced users) know the true path is Nvidia.

I agree completely with Abraham. I used Rhino 5 on my MacBook Pro with Parallels, which was a really sweet setup, switching from OSX to Windows with the swipe of three fingers. Unfortunately Rhino 6 and 7 for Windows don’t work with Parallels anymore.

Hi
I own Dell xps15 for 2 years now, 4k screen GTX1600, it was high end model at this time, excellent choice, maybe better with grasshopper than Mac
Go on no mistake

Thank you guys for your suggestions!!!

I checked the MBP 16 out in person today… and it think the quality and hardware differences are worth the price (actually +420€). Let’s see how RH6 will perform and how often I will have to switch to BootCamp (I only tried it a bit on my roommate’s 7 year old MacBook 13”, which has no dedicated GPU :stuck_out_tongue: ).

I will also give KeyShot and Cycles a try for rendering and also TwinMotion for real time rendering…
If someone is interested I can let you know how it goes.

Cheers, Rudi

yes please keep us posted. I currently have a 15" MBP since a little over a year but you can leave the P away. It’s slow (but that one has a radeon 450 2GB card, which is too slow for Rhino) The lack of the esc. key and countless mistypes alone are worth a trade in.
The screen and trackpad are fantastic though, and for presentations, I like the built in features of Mac OS.

Hey I just posted my current experience with the Mac version of Rhino so far here!
@Gijs, let me know if I can try something specific (a larger model, some gh-scripts etc.) on the MBP16 for you!

Have a nice day,

Rudi
