Creating SubDs for complex meshes

Dear all,

I am new to Rhino, currently using Rhino 7 (90-day trial version).

My aim is to convert an STL mesh (Fig.1) to STEP file for conducting CFD Analyses.
I have used the following steps:

  1. Open .STL file
  2. MeshRepair > Check > Repair > “Good Mesh” (Fig.2)
  3. QuadRemesh > Default settings > Preview

As I use QuadRemesh feature to create SubD, the QuadMesh generation task freezes at 75%.
Has anyone experienced the same with complex meshes and could they please help in this regard?

I greatly appreciate your response(s).

Many thanks,
Rajas

It may be the settings used with QuadRemesh or an issue with the mesh not necessarily making it a bad mesh. One guess without seeing the mesh is to try turning off detect hard edges. Post the mesh if you still have an issue at 75% please.

as your geometry has repetition / symmetry, you may also want to try to only us a smaller section (3x3x3) elements - generate the Sud-D and rearrange / array the inner 1x1x section…

@Tom_P,

Thank you, I tried converting a single cell of lattice structure from STL to SubD, and it worked!

Although I’m not proceeding with this approach due to some other reasons, I am grateful for your contribution!

Hi, are you still using Rhino for dealing with TPMS structures? I’ve recently encountered similar issues
