stunning results, i am not a Vray guy, but i am still a bit jealous everytime i see renders. Are these little fibres sticking out everywhere modelled or are these part of some vector displacement parameter/material?

Thanks!
glad you like it!

those little fibres are made using v-ray fur, basically you make fur grow over any surface or mesh you want, you need just to play with length, bending, density, etc

ic, so vray is doing all that magic under the hood or can you implement your own maps? i just assume that is some vector displacement, since these would allow for a displacement in more than just along the surface normals… i wonder if that could be replicated with cycles, i know we have vector but i am not sure if that works 3 dimensionally like here.

You have several params to adjust, in this case i used custom bitmaps for density and bend direction.
It works more like a blender modifier
