Recently I’m testing a laptop that I consider a pretty capable machine (Intel 12800HX, Nvidia RTX A3000). My goal is to be more mobile than I used to be with my very bulky 17,3" laptop.
Obviously working in Grasshopper/Rhino or Revit on a small screen can be uncomfortable but I realized, that not only does screen size matter but pixel density deals a huge role too.
One of the things that I was especially excited about the new laptop was the 3840x2400 16" screen.
Once you see how everything is crisp using such high resolution you would never want to go back to WQHD and certainly, you forgot about working in 1080p. You also realize that your sight may be better than you thought because even tiny texts became sharp and readable again.
Saying all that… my enthusiasm quickly cooled off when I realized that Grasshopper UI is working quite slowly even with simple definitions.
I see that you @DavidRutten like to play with graphics and Grasshopper 2 seems to be even richer in graphics, I really appreciate your jokes but it might come at a performance cost.
If I had to choose between all component gradients, a shiny Volume orb but working in lower resolution with less readable text and crisp, high-resolution display but more flat graphics - I would choose the higher resolution.
The same goes for the very detailed Listen component ear canal. It hurts my ears as I wiggle Grasshopper Canvas and my laptop’s cooling system ramps up.
Seems like quite a lot to be rendered as for a couple of components
I’m joking a little, but performance problems are real.
Only 32 fps in 3840x2400 resolution, when you pan the canvas by yourself you feel slowness a lot more than when just watching it
64 fps in 2560x1440 resolution. This should be a standard even on lower-tier machines
I don’t know if this is a fully valid method, but here is some comparison.
50 Point components vs 50 MD Sliders. Simple graphics of Point components gives 2x more frames.
2560x1440 100% DPI
3840x2400 200% DPI
Would you expect some meaningful performance gains with simplified graphics in GH2?
If so, would you consider adding some graphics options to turn off some effects to make it more flat, e.g. turning off the embossing of component capsules, number line slider indicator, and grip dots?
