Whan I try to bend a surface using the bend command it transforms the surface into an “S”. How can I just bend only part of a surface?

Start the spine in the middle of the surface. During the preview as you move the end of the spine the surface will appear to have an “S” shape. However after you complete the command the surface not adjacent to the spine should be undistorted.
CageEdit is another good command for bending and distorting objects. You can use Cage to create the control object, but you can also create control objects using other methods.
