Baffled by Meshes

I’ve watched several videos regarding creating meshes for 3d printing, and I’m still confused and not grasping what the settings represent. I created a model in Rhino for Mac, and it is 9.13" x 5.19" x 5.72". Please see the attached with my mesh settings.

Issue is the model is over 0.5 gigabytes, and I believe my polygon count is very low for such a large file. Any help is appreciated to demystify meshes, and to point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

What is the polygon count actually?

This value is way too high IMO…

I would set it to something like 256 or 512

I usually add an angle setting of like 15° to force the mesh to subdivide at sharp radii

I would also check Refine mesh and Simple planes

Hello,

My polygon count is well over 5 million, so now it’s apparent how clueless I am with my mesh setup, and polygon count. I previewed a mesh set to 1,000 Minimum initial grid quads, and it yields just over 400k polygons — making the model much more manageable.

Thank you very much for solving this issue. I appreciate the help very much.

Here is an old guide that may help?

Hello - This is not a good idea in general if you want a manageable mesh. This number, if you are creating meshes from surfaces or polysurfaces, is the minimum number of quads per face in a polysurface - every face, no matter how small, or how flat, gets this number of mesh faces as a starting point before any refinement starts.

Hi Scott,

Thanks very much for providing the link. This is an excellent guide!

Thank you Pascal Golay for sharing your advice, and making me aware of an unmanageable mesh.

I’m just beginning in 3D modeling, so my skills are not where they need to be. I appreciate all your help.
