Ambient Occlusion Shadow Error

I have had this before on other projects but haven’t found it particularly problematic until now.
In my model, I have some scaffolding and handrails in front of larger geometry and the shadows it creates with ambient occlusion seem.. just wrong.

Attached is the image with ambient occlusion, and also in shaded to show the geo clearly.

I have had this before with other hand rails and, roof trusses etc. any geo that is smaller/narrow and in front of larger geo.

Are there some settings I can adjust to clean up the shadows behind these objects?


I think Rhino prob uses screen angle (could be totally wrong), so won’t produce this:

was your render in Render mode or Arctic ?
