Active Layer State

Hi,
Is there a way of knowing which Layer State from a list of them is the active one? There doesn’t seem to be any user feedback telling us what one is current. Or am I missing it?
Thanks

Hi Sach -

No. Most/many things in Rhino work this way - you can save a snapshot of a current “state” but that doesn’t mean that state is “active”.

Thanks @wim

It would be useful to know that if a layer state is indeed ‘active’ or ‘current’, it should be clear to the user! I imagine that once the layers are changed, then the Layer State status will also.

Like in the Layer panel, there is a tick next to the active layer.

Thanks

@wim I was about to ask the same question when I found this thread. After activating a Layer State, then spending time modifying the model, there are times when I want to update the Layer State. On return to the Layer State list, there is no indication regarding the last activated Layer State. If there are multiple Layer States with similar definitions, it is easy to forget which one was last activated.

I think that this scenario differs slightly from your response. I agree that after activating a Layer State, many actions, including hiding or showing individual Layers, effectively render the activated Layer State no longer ‘active’. However, when it comes to updating the Layer State to reflect the now current Layer selection, it would be helpful if there was a positive indication of the last activated Layer State.

If it is not practical to provide an indication in the Layer State list, perhaps it would be possible to record the last activated Layer State name in the main status bar, or a status area within the Layer State Manager. Another approach might be to provide a ShowLastActivatedLayerStateName command. It would be OK if the memory is limited to the point at which the model is closed, meaning that there is no need to carry forward the knowledge to the next time the model is opened.

I understand that any solution might present technical challenges, but it would be really helpful to have the positive feedback.

Keep smiling.

@wim I found this thread too.

I note the YT comment regarding MacOS. It is just as important in MacOS as in Windows.
