I can’t use my 3D connexion mouse in the WIP because when the focus is on Rhino 9, and contrary to Rhino 8, I loose the navigation settings that allow me to set the navigation the way I have been using it for 15 years.
I assume you are aware of the _SpaceMouse command?
@osuire Don’t know if this is related to Windows too…? But for sure on the Mac since a couple of WIPs ago there’s been a change in the way Rhino WIP is “communicating” with 3Dconnexion.
Currently my device is unusable [ with axis are reversed in relation to R8 and other issues]
No Idea if this ripples to Windows WIP too… But thought it’s worth mentioning here.
No, I was not. At some point, it didn’t exist and the only way to tweak 3D mouse settings was through the 3dx ware properties.
Since the 3dx properties always worked up to now (V9 WIP), I had no reason to look for a rhino command.
By the way, this begs the question : is it wise to have redundant settings ?
I think it would be better to have all settings in the driver but some users prefer to use their 3Dconnexion device without the driver.
I don’t think 3dconnexion support the Rhino WIP yet (they only mention 7 & 8 on their website), so you are getting the generic settings that are provided for any program they don’t handle explicitly.
I’ll ask them if they have a timeline for R9 support.
Reply from 3dconnexion support was that it is down to Rhino (sic) when R9 will be supported in the driver. Does that chime with McNeel perspective, @wim?
We are currently working on the 3DConnexion support in the Rhino 9 WIP (on both Windows and Mac). Yes, things are quite broken on the Mac at the moment (this is temporary).
Our thinking on this is evolving as we get feedback from users and we’re currently exploring ways to support both the “old way” (which was quite poor on Mac, but some users still liked it) and the new (where everything is controlled from the 3DConnexion driver). We’re not settled on anything yet, but this feedback helps.
We apologize that the Mac side is (more) broken at the moment. It’s only temporary …hence the “Work-In-Progress” part of the WIP. Stay tuned.
It would be nice if there was a way to use a SpaceMouse to navigate in Grasshopper.
Hi. Go to “C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3DxWare\3DxWinCore\Cfg” - here are the basic configuration files for programs that the 3dconnexion driver supports. Open the “RhinoFS.xml” file in an editor, this is the basic configuration for Rhino 6, 7, and 8. In the block, copy the line Rhinoceros 8 and paste it below it. In the pasted line, change “Rhinoceros 8” to “Rhinoceros 9.” It should look something like this:
<Signature>
<Name>STR_RHINOCEROS_FS</Name>
<ExecutableName>Rhino\.exe</ExecutableName>
<ExecutableName>Revit\.exe</ExecutableName>
<Transport>S80</Transport>
<SiOpenAppName>Rhinoceros 6</SiOpenAppName>
<SiOpenAppName>Rhinoceros 7</SiOpenAppName>
<SiOpenAppName>Rhinoceros 8</SiOpenAppName>
<SiOpenAppName>Rhinoceros 9</SiOpenAppName>
<Hints>
<UsesV3DCMDs/>
<UsesFileSync/>
</Hints>
</Signature>
Stop and restart the 3dconnexion driver. The driver should now read the Rhino 8 settings stored in the “Rhino.xml” or “RhinoFS” file from the user settings directory at “C:\Users*****\AppData\Roaming\3Dconnexion\3DxWare\Cfg” as well as for “Rhino WIP”.
Fun fact : All it takes to fix this is to change a number.
To McNeelies and 3DXies : please stop pretending it’s about spending weeks in development ; just change the friggin’ number, thanks.
Oh hell yes. Thank you for mentioning this.
I asked for this back in this 2018 post.
Here’s another thread with a few hacks that allow using the 3D mouse in GH.
Yeah we all want to pan and zoom around the canvas using a Spacenavigator / Spacemouse
I can confirm that. Please consider adding that feature, it would speed up things quite a bit.
I’m so used to the Space Navigator working in Blender and main Rhino, it works so well. It would be really cool!
…yeah… Only if we also keep the capability of let it work as it is currently.
I love the fact I can navigate 3d space while the cursor is in grasshopper. I don’t want to lose this.
My hope is that both would work with two space navigators simultaneously or at least to have the option to use it or not
Having options is always the best way.
Enabling/ disabling the 3d mouse in Grasshopper with a toggle button would be ideal.
Enable 3d mouse:
- Rhino
- Grasshopper
