Workflow for quickly marking/sepparating faces from a complex mesh

I was wondering if anybody has any good ideas on a workflow/method for this.

We received some files from a client made using an industry specific software which we cannot open. They also saved it as a .dxf which of course we could open, but the file is a single giant mesh in a single layer. I can’t share any files or images because of NDA, but it’s a complex geometry with tunnels and ore bodies.

We have a meeting set up early next week where we will go through the model and they will help us orient in it, showing where different parts are in the model etc.

Now my question is, is there an easy way I could select some faces of the mesh and copy/transfer them to different layers? Is there any other method I could use to quickly label things while in the meeting, where I can clean it up more properly later?

Hej -

“Easy” all depends on the specifics of the model. There’s ExtractMeshFaces to extract (copies of) faces of mesh objects. If you start typing that command, you’ll find several related commands that might, or might not, apply in your specific case.

If there are different objects in that scene, there’s a chance that SplitDisjointMesh will do something useful here.
