WISH: Middle mouse button to "Zoom at selected" by default in Rhino

This is one of my biggest secrets!!
This configuration setup is a time-saver machine.

  • Use the middle mouse button to “'_Zoom _Selected”

For example, putting '_Zoom _Selected as the default text in “Run this Macro” but not selected as shown in the image.

Or as shown in the screenshot, move the Zoom Selected button in the center of the default.Popup toolbar. So when we double-click the middle mouse, it is Zoom Selected.

WISH: Make MMB = Zoom Selected by default

I would like to revisit this wish because I think there is a broader workflow principle behind it.

Zoom Selected is one of the most frequently repeated viewport-navigation actions in 3D. It should be a muscle-memory action, not something we have to think about.

My proposal is:

MMB → Zoom Selected / Frame Selected

with:

Shift + MMB
Ctrl + MMB
Alt + MMB

available for the other navigation functions, in line with existing navigation conventions.

The important point is not simply having another shortcut. It is establishing a consistent navigation language.

A typical workflow becomes:

LMB Select → MMB Focus

This is extremely fast and requires almost no cognitive load.

For people who work across Rhino, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, CAD and other 3D applications, having common fundamental navigation concepts would also reduce the amount of application-specific muscle memory we need to maintain.

Rhino already allows this configuration, as I demonstrated in the original post. The request is simply to make this workflow a sensible default, rather than something users have to discover and configure themselves.

A small change used thousands of times can have a surprisingly large effect on the overall modeling experience.

Viewport navigation should become muscle memory.
