Wish: Displaymode shadow density, not only color

Ugh…really? How important is this?

-J

Yeah, he mentioned a slider, too
For me the current one would be OK as long as we could drag the arrows up/down - check out the Sun Intensity on Sun panel - similar way. Pressing the arrow keys up/down while in text field doesn’t cut it for me - the text doesn’t update and change is still too small…
I vote for slider…

Not very important. But sometimes the ocd in me wants 50% sharp, just like with material values. But Not important. If I had to choose then slider only.

Ya, I know what you’re talking about…but it requires a special, overridden control, with specialized handlers…all of which I was trying to avoid… I can write the coolest shader that’s only 100 lines long, but adding a stupid UI element requires 100’s of lines of code… plus that effort gets duplicated (somewhat) when we add it to the Mac… I realize I’m just whining here, but was trying to make this a simple addition…which is never really the case when UI is involved…especially on the Mac.

Understood Jeff, if it is simpler to have a slider exactly like other ones in this panel that would work well.
Any precise numerical values for each of these can be easily set by scripting for users with OCD
For me numerical control is not critical.

Fully support the reasoning there guys. Simple is beautiful!

@Holo, @Jarek

Ok guys, checkout the latest build… a little bit of both worlds… Also note (Jarek) that David snuck in the Skylight Quality setting slider.

-J

Can’t wait to test it out!

But… you know when you give somebody what they want, then they suddenly want more???

I just played with the testshowshadowmap command and saw what the base shadow really is, and now I wish we could have a gamma control over it, + a higher than 100% multiplier… (Even though I guess (Jarek and) I might be the only ones who will use it…)

Check this out:
Viewport with geometry sat to gray to simulate the testshowshadowmap color:

And the testshowshadowmap image:

And then the actual project image:

See how those protruding bricks could benefit from some deep shadows in the inner corners? That could easily be acchieved if the shadow map had a different gamma.

There are lot’s of tasty details in the shadows that are lost here, that would aid in reading the image better.

@Jeff,

I think it all works great and as expected! For me the separate slider for skylight is another display breakthrough in Rhino allowing for fast and good quality Skylight + Cast Shadows realtime display.
Thank you for listening and making it happen!
@DavidEranen - I was wondering is the 1-10 numbers are tied to anything specific or some arbitrary values?
I want to do more testing but seems like with high quality cast shadows (260 MB) #3 Skylight is a great setting for quality vs speed.
I don’t think so but are these numbers tied to Cast Shadow quality at all?

I can’t seem to find that slider, is there a wip version that I don’t know about?

I have daily builds enabled. There is a test command for it I think, but can’t remember it now!

Did you try the TestSSAOOptions command?
If you play just with the Radius and Intensity parameters, you may actually get some more definition as needed. I know this is convoluted and a test command but in many cases control over these two settings is great…

@Jarek The numbers are arbitrary. They control the number of total samples calculated to create the skylight shadow effect.

Thanks David, I think the range is pretty good, going from fast and grainy for real-time speed and upper end of nice and smooth but still not bogging down the display completely. Nice job. Thanks for adding this!

Nice, that was a cool feature and upping the intensity yielded a god result.

One thing I noticed is that since we now have skylight control it could be cool to have a separate slider for the skylight intensity in there

Also a toggle for the skylight would be great for those who have a need for a faster v5 display mode. I have had many questions about this from users with simpler laptops.
AND noticed that when we open a dwg or an obj then the default v6 light isn’t added, it uses the V5 style, so resetting the rendersettings is needed, but then FPS goes down.

This is just ment as a maybe it’s worth adding more settings when you first add a few… But i hope this doesn’t come along as an “I want this and that and all the bells and wistles for my own sake” becuase now I am very happy and pleased. So THANK YOU!!!

Hi guys,

I just wanted to check out the sun intensity setting and obviously that made me wish for a sun shadow intensity setting exposed too (that alters the value Jarek showed in the rsun altering script earlier in this thread)

And then I noticed that the sun intensity seems a bit broken:

Since Skylight On/Off is in the Render panel, maybe it should be located there?
Along with Radius slider, obviously! (both these setting in the test command are global, not per-display mode I think)

Yeah, that would be nice and consistent with all other lights having that setting exposed in UI.

Can’t reproduce that one here, 0 = no light and no shadows…

 all of these have been asked for before… And also looks like these are @Andy’s territory, so technically you are not asking for too much (from the same folks, at least  )
