Uv editor snaps

I’m trying to use UV Editor and it’s some kind of challenge. It will be much more convenient to edit UV in separate window rather than trying to draw some objects in 3d space and try to match the UV polygons. But it’s my own opinion.

The questions are:

  1. Why in UV editor the snap is not available for objects? I can’t select particular corner. It’s always somewhere nearby.
  2. Why the snap is not working with UV space? I would like to put the corner of the polygon to the corner of UV space but can’t. It’s just somewhere nearby as well.
  3. I have few objects and would like to set one UV space for all of them. When I select them together the UV edit button is not available. It’s not working as well with group. So, how to do so?
  4. I have an object which consist of few plans. So, I’m trying to put their elements separately in UV editor but can’t, they are locked together. How to do so?

Thanks!

@Alexey_Borisov,

Point 1 and 2: When you run the UV editor you’re asked to create a rectangle, enable grid snap and draw a square to define this rectangle. After the square has been picked, UV islands are unwrapped into this square.

These islands (parts of your unwrapped geometry) are mesh objects. You can snap to them if you enable the Vertex Osnap. You might as well create a square rectangle as curve and lock that before running the UV Editor. Then pick the same points when it asks for the rectangle to unwrap to. Btw. using the _Unwrap command (the Ducky icon) before running the UV Editor allows to control edges kept together (or seams) in your geometry before using the UV Editor. The UV Editor is best used with UV mapping not projective mapping types.

Point 3 in your list is not possible in Rhino5 but in V6.

Point 4 in your list i do not understand, you might show a picture or post a file.

Ok, Vertex Osnap is a half of solution. The problem is to move/stick the mesh to particular corner of the UV area. See the image bellow.

By the way, it’s the same object for the 4-th question. Here is 3 plans combined into one object. I can’t separate them to move individually.

Use the _Orient command to move and scale the UV mesh in one step. Note that the option of the command should be set to Copy=No Scale=3D. Start the command, then click the first reference point (upper left) then the second (upper right). When the command asks for the target points, click the upper left and upper right point of your UV rectangle.

If you used grid snap to draw the UV rectangle, you can use grid snap for the target points again.

Note my first reply above. The _Unwrap command allows to set up seams so you can control what is seperated in the UV Editor.

The trick is to snap to grid rather than UV area, because, as I can see it’s kind of… locked?.. Ok, thanks!
