Type-case Desk

This is a cherry-wood desk, with an epoxy inlay showing the layout of an old type-case used for letter-press printing. Something I was into as a child.

Using Grasshopper for his was overkill, but being parametric, it allowed me to play with scaling and font choices rather easily. This image is at the absolute limit of size for my CNC router.

The image was carved using a cylindrical cutter, rather than a V-cutter, since the boards are not perfectly flat.

The whole area is then filled with black epoxy.

And this is then carved back off again to give the resulting inlayed letters.

You have to love ligatures, and the fact that after 200 years or more, the U and J are still out of sequence!
