Sometimes while moving object with gumball we just want to turn on snap for current move only. the current system allows to only use one(Smooth/snappy dragging) at a time. I am asking, is there any way to turn on snappy dragging by holding CTRL or maybe pressing Shift+Tab and as the user complete its move it should go back to smooth dragging.
You can use the snappy Gumball with disabled OSnaps. When you need it to snap, press Alt.
I have been asking for that long time ago, but the developers didn’t agreed…
What, i am asking is not about move command, i am saying about gumball move, when someone move objects using gumball then the function Alt key do for other function, it should do for gumball movement too…
Because we use Osnap all the time with move command but turn off for gumball. now sometimes while making gumball movement we want our gumball to snap to certain vertex or mid-point so there should be an option to do so for that time only.
Hi @Kalpit_3d,
Martin didn’t mention the move command. He explained how you can set Rhino up so you can have a smooth gumball drag and hold down the Alt key if you temporarily want to snap. After releasing the Alt key the gumball will go back to smooth dragging. It’s a clever workaround that gives you what you asked for.

Jeremy
While this is technically true, it is not a practical solution for two reasons:
-
Snappy Gumball (while OSnap is deactivated) will instantly move the selected object with a distance equal to the distance between the original center of the Gumball and the area where the mouse pointer was located upon that action. This is really disturbing, especially if the intention is to move the object by a small distance.

Rhino users with a 3d mouse will be forced to often reach the keyboard to press the Alt key. While some 3d mice also include an Alt key, it’s not working in the same way as a true Alt key. For example, my SpacePilot, which has a hardware Alt key, can’t register holding it to turn the OSnap on and off. It’s dedicated Alt key will only register a single press. That makes it totally unusable for that particular purpose.
Hi Bobi, I hadn’t really had this percolate into my conscious mind. Even now you’ve given it the necessary boost to get it there I am undisturbed. I guess we are all different.
It’s all about having different perspectives.
For First reason: i will say, you first try snappy dragging, what i am asking is just a toggle for Snappy/smooth dragging toggle for gumball movement which already happen in move command with Alt key (you can use other keys as i mentioned earlier).
For second reason, i will say that Alt key is already used while moving for copying object or toggle snap during move command, why dont you bother for that. And even if this function is available then what will happen with your workflow, it is just an added function. you will be fine with whatever you currently have. if you think Alt key is the culprit then suggest some other key combo.
My reply was regarding the suggestion to turn off the OSnap entirely, in order to be able to use Alt to snap to objects and via the Gumball. Personally I find the aforementioned two reasons too limiting for my workflow. Other people may be happy with that approach, though.
I had a few proposals in the past about the ability to switch between Snappy Gumball and Smooth Gumball via the Tab key, but they were rejected.
Holding down the Ctrl key while moving an object with the Gumball is a good idea, because typically Ctrl is used to restrict the movement to vertical direction. However, since the Gumball arrows (and its axis plane) have their own arrows for the direction of movement, Rhino could be programmed so that holding the Ctrl key while dragging the Gumball will temporarily switch to the opposite Gumball type.
Example 1: Smooth Gumball is active, then the user selects some objects and start dragging it with the Gumball’s arrow. Upon pressing and holding the Ctrl key the Gumball changes its type to Snappy Gumball. Releasing the Ctrl key returns the previus state of Gumball.
Example 2: Snappy Gumball is active, then the user selects some objects and start dragging it with the Gumball’s arrow. Upon pressing and holding the Ctrl key the Gumball changes its type to Smooth Gumball. Releasing the Ctrl key returns the previus state of Gumball.
