I’ve never used SubD for general modelling before, so I thought I wanted to start with something simple to teach myself. Nothing fancy here, as I have little idea!

welcome to the first step in the journey of a thousand miles.
this piece look pretty great, can’t wait to see what your next step looks like!
Looking good!
Your parameters for “simple” seem abstruse to me. Funny. Looks quite nice. Practically, based on the views posted, the tail might be a bit thin and pointed / sharp for a pendant that is [in particularly] at collarbone level. If we set the circumstance where by the materials used are in the “fine jewelry” category - top in every aspect natural diamond and pedigree sapphires etc. one predicts the use scenario is formal and thus the design is such that it tries to minimize snagging on cloths. [An attribute one generally wants in a jewelry design.] Giving more depth [ thickness] to the tail / areas might secondarily correct any issue with the former. I am going to “let go” of any commentary on specific aspects of the stones / settings except to acknowledge that the designing of these are magical / mystical and it is easy to get into this mindset when the foundation into which the stones will be set is strong / elegant as is the case here.
The background texture upon which the pendant sits is an easy fix to make it more realistic.
Given the views, how the pendant would actually sit on the chest seems difficult to know. Irrespective, any potential adjustments / fixes mentioned seem quite doable without compromise to the geometric shape as is now.
Personally, I would go with a chain where the main function / utility of it is to securely suspend the pendant and fasten it to the neck. Thus the links are very much smaller but adequately thick. Viewing this pendant from 2- 3 meters away on the just outlined chain design, the pendant appears “floating” a “statement” piece.
congrats david, this looks nice.
just a hint what jumped my eye immediately (not to belittle your work, but to point in a direction where you can potentially make it better): when worn, your blue gems face downwards, which is really sad for the expensive stones. and like andy said, the tail seems very pointy, not sure this is very comfortable to wear.
I often print the designs in resin, that helps a ton to make learning curves steeper. a printer costs like $300 nowadays.
