You can also use SetPt for a lot of this stuff. If you create a CPlane based on the relevant geometry - can be as easy as picking 3 points - then you can select your verts/faces, use SetPt and then set z=0 relative to the Cplane you created.
I always use set point mate, but for having fit plan or fit line what Pascal suggested works perfectly fine.
I also am a fan of your A class videos.
having said that I should say I wish someday you make us some video with this title: " how to move easily from subD to A class surface in Rhino".
Ha! I mean…that’s a hard video to make! But a good idea nonetheless. I’ll tell you a little secret I found though - IF your downstream process can support it, the render mesh of a SubD is significantly smoother than the NURNBS conversion of the same SubD. Go into properties and jack up the settings:
The use ExtractRenderMesh to pull the display mesh out. Run Zebra on both that, and the NURBS conversion of the same geometry - you’ll be amazed at the difference around the star points. The one caveat of course is that not every process downstream will support the use of STL meshes in a production environment. So, if you’ve got a Solidworks user downstream of you, they’ll probably not be too stoked.
To be honest downstream, I will use this in SOLIDWORKS for details, and my process is to export the mesh as stl and import it in SOLIDWORKS and resurf everything from scratch using that mesh (reverse engineering).
I know that it’s easier to resurf in Rhino and solid f…g works is Trible in surfacing, but I still need it to be parametric, so bad news is the final surface will have a lower quality than the STL.
I’ve been using ALias and CATIA/ICEM Shape before and we did the same method (trying to create a A class surface using stl file).
but I think with rhino and all the flexibility maybe there will be a chance to go faster from subD to (near) A class surface ( G2 Bezier surfaces with good patch layout).
oooffff. I feel for you there. Parametric AND Class-A in Solidworks is…rough going. The only real advice I can offer is to get an extra bag of your favorite coffee and cue up a really good playlist. Sometimes you gotta do it the hard way.
