Shrink Wrap not working without inflate

Hello, when I try to convert a point cloud tunnel section into geometry using Shrink Warp, it doesn’t generate one and I get an error message “failed to generate mesh” unless I activate Inflate but unfortunately with Inflate the geometry is not correct because the walls etc. are inflated.

Maybe someone has as tip how it can works.

Likely too many holes…

Thanks for your answer.
I even have the problem when I separate part of the point cloud as a test (separate Point Cloud), like in the picture, even there I get the same error message and it only works when Inflate is turned on.

Post a part of your file so someone else can give it a try…

It will be difficult to post the entire excerpt as it is a few hundred Mb in size, but I can generate an excerpt of it and link to it in the next message.

Here is a very small section of the point cloud, as the maximum upload file must not exceed 20Mb.

Point Cloud Test.3dm (4.3 MB)

I think that’s the nature of the command.

The above point cloud can be turned in an open mesh with many holes. The shrinkwrap command puts a lot of voxels onto this mesh and unions everything.

As a comparison, here’s a screenshot of an open mesh with the shrinkwrap result I got without the inflate and fill holes options:

In some situations you can use the inflate and offset options but if your result should still be an open mesh then you might need some more tricks.

One thing you can try is adding surfaces or meshes to roughly fill the largest holes / voids. You can use slightly enlarged versions of these surfaces to cut holes into your final mesh after shrinkwrapping.
