Hi There,
I use Rhino for only a year or so and I really appreciate RHINO 8 updates on draughting tools. As many of us still make drawings - apart form CNC files and 3D models for printing at the same time. Developing all these tools are what makes Rhino a really powerful software on the market right now.
To keep growing this I would like to suggest some vital improvements (Please let me know if some of theses were already discussed):
-
HATCHES ( are the weak point of many software and they are a game changer when they work - see ArchiCad) - I would love to see hatches applied without boundary. Hatches which can be refined with a magic wand. hatches which can be modified with Hatch Boolean operations - to add, to take away, to intersect…Please look at ArchiCAD’s as it is one of the best drafting software I have ever used ( I used most of CADs which is and was on the market for architects).

I have a problem with the drawings to be in the model space. I have to hide it when working on the model or making make2D and then I have to reset the scene, so the Detail Views show the right view under the drawing…There is a lot of workaround for this, but somehow it feels very unintuitive. Maybe something like - Make2D or Clipping Drawing - > scale - > move to Layout directly - together as a dedicated “Detail View” - a container, which is editable like the model space, but keep the detail together, but it is not in the model space - like in SketchUp.
-
I would like to use custom shaped (circular at least) viewports. Could we trim it?
-
The files can get really heavy with 1 ArchE sized drawing - I usually use this scale. I use stacked viewports, annotation, real lines over viewports. performance issue - meshes and geometry is weighing down the model to a point when it is impossible to use. It should be a warning or a way to foresee this, so we can plan ahead, rather than fight to the end.
-
I would like to add hatch under a Detail View. At the moment, it is not possible because of the pre-set order of the elements in Layout.
-
Active Property sampler - Eye- dropper style - pick up selected properties and set as the Active Doc Properties - Layer, Colour, Line Type…- Match properties works only for existing objects (see ArchiCAD for how it works - and I would recommend to look at other clever tools they are developing CAD since 1984 - it’s (one of ) the best draughting software by far).
-
Fix transparency / white hatches in vector output! Transparent and gradient fills/hatches vital on a sophisticated Layout and I would like a vector or at least a hybrid PDF export.
-
A dedicated shortcut Print Display, Status - ON and OFF.
-
Clipping Planes and Clipping Section - very confusing to have two tools for almost the same thing, but different. if we insist on having both just make them the same command with different name (for people who used to use Clipping Planes) or create a visual indicator of which one is which as it’s confusing.
-
I still don’t understand why the model changes if I change scale. I always use the second option , so in theory the model is the same size, but the mm will become the equivalent length in feet and fraction inches. Why does the model and named views and everything else reacts as it was a change in size? Or did I miss something?
-
THE ABILITY TO ROTATE A DETAIL VIEW IN LAYOUT! - I needed this functionality many times and the only workaround I found is fluffing with the CPlane, which takes a lot longer than a simple rotate of the Detail View. PLEASE.

It would be very helpful if I could hand over my LAYOUT as DWG file without the model independent pages or in a batch (various selected pages). And hand over the MODEL separately.

Make texture mapping editing easier…
