After a recent windows update, Rhino keeps crashing when “preparing viewports” on the loading screen. I have a fresh install and do have the latest Nvidia drivers installed for studio. I am running a 3050 GPU for laptop and am on windows 11. I have tried almost everything, but please let me know if you know how to fix the issue, thank you.
Thank you for report. Please run SystemInfo in the command line of Rhino, then copy-past all popup contents here.
Hi Jessesn, I am having the same issue as the orginal poster. Once I choose a new viewport, rhino crashes and freezes, then shuts down. Each time this happens, my entire computer shuts down as well even after rhino is closed. This is what shows up when I run SystemInfo. Any help would be appreciated!

Please got the NVIDIA website, find the latest graphics driver, download and update it, then Try again.
Make sure you do a clean install of the driver - when you start the driver installer choose custom installation and then check the box for clean installation.
Same problem here.
Rhino crashes to desktop after “Preparing Viewports…“ appears.
”Safe Mode” works.
Clean reinstall of the latest graphics drivers did not help.

Could you give it a try with repairing Microsoft Visual C++2015-2022 Redistributable ?
Wow — that did the trick!
Did I do something wrong or is this indeed caused by a recent Windows 11 update?
Thank you so much for the quick response! ![]()
For a while now, I think since summer 2025, we have seen increasing reports about Rhino crashing especially after Windows updates have been applied.
Hi! I have the same problem. I tried everything mentioned above, but nothing works permanently. The only temporary fix is to uninstall and reinstall, but the issue comes back after restarting the laptop.

Hi Danny -
Does that mean that you did a clean install of the GeForce drivers?
In a different thread, a user reported that updating the drivers of the secondary GPU fixed “things”. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt trying that here.
