Rhino 8: How to save popup toolbar in rhino 8?

Hi @Gijs,
Any progress on this one?
I’ve just made a small edit to my custom toolbar and was hoping to save it as .rui.
This still doesn’t seem to work. I’m having to rely on rhino 7 to do this.
.rui are so easy to deploy as plugins, it’s a pity to hear they are going to be deprecated.
Will the same simple .zip packaging method be available for containers?

Where did you hear they are going to be depreciated? This is not the case.

For custom toolbars you need to create a new .rui and create toolbars/icons into that custom rui. But that can be done in Rhino 8 as well.
Saving a single toolbar as a new rui is probably not going to change during the life cycle of Rhino 8 unfortunately.

I realize now that you were referring to the method of moving toolbars around, not the .rui format.
So I should go to toolbars “New…” then drag the buttons of my old toolbar over, save, and all should be good? I’ll give that a go.

@guido

Go to Window > Toolbars
Click File > New
Save to “myrui.rui” or something similar
Click Edit > New Toolbar
Start adding buttons. This can be done in this dialog or after closing and drag+drop

Save the rui often, because there is a known crash bug that can happen when moving/dragging buttons around.

I’m having problems saving again. @Gijs I followed your instructions and all seemed smooth. Created new .rui, copied the buttons to new toolbars, saved, closed Rhino. I renamed the newly saved toolbar from Plugin8.rui to Plugin.rui (replacing the original Rhino7 one) reopened Rhino and it loaded perfectly. :white_check_mark:
Next I replaced one icon, attempted to save again, but it just won’t save. Could it have something to do with having the Plugin running?

Ok, I somehow managed to save it. not sure wich part worked because I tried several things.
probably the location.
it loads from:
AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\Plug-ins\puginName(49ac963b-df50-49d7-acd6-37086831035f)\1.0.0.0
I guess anything in here is locked while rhino is running and cant be saved?
Load protection on the plugin didnt help either.
I copied the .rui on my desktop, renamed it, loaded it from my desktop, fixed the icons, saved

@guido I see a lot of steps there, let me try to recap:

  1. Create a new rui file
  2. Add a toolbar
  3. add buttons to that toolbar
  4. Save the toolbar as plugin8.rui
  5. Close Rhino
  6. Rename the toolbar to plugin.rui
  7. Reopen Rhino
Now you say this plugin.rui loads perfectly. This means that Rhino was already ‘expecting’ that rui to be there, most likely because you already loaded it before.
This could mean that there is a releated .xml file that now no longer matches with that .rui file, because you renamed plugin8.rui to plugin.rui. I suspect that that xml file then prevents things to save correctly, but this is just a guess. In your settings folder, do you see any plugin*.xml?
    %appdata%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\settings\Scheme__Default

that’s right.

I sure do. plugin…xml, plugin8…xml, and a buch of older plugin tests i experimented with in the past.
Let me try and get rid of them.
Thanks @Gijs for baring with me.

Generally you don’t need to handle this, but if you see some anomalies, this is probably the first thing to try. How it should work is that, upon saving the toolbar and closing Rhino, this xml file gets deleted automatically. That’s what it does here in my tests, but different users have reported issues with it.
