Please help with sweep

handrail.3dm (70.6 KB)

Hello,

Could someone please help? I am still new to Rhino, and I am trying to create a bannister. My problem is, is that the sweep command either twists or flattens the profile while generating it, where as i am trying to achieve a result similar to the upright extrusion plugin in sketchup (which doesnt work on this curve).

I have not been able to figure out how to align the axis or orient the profile in a way that the result isnt mangled, or travels upside down the rail.

I suggest completing this in two steps: separate the parts with significant curvature changes from the smoother parts to create the Sweep surface, as demo below,

Thank you for your advice, the main issue that I’m facing is in keeping orientation of the cross-sections world aligned as the sweep is generated. While the end profile being rotated 180 degrees from the original isn’t the solution I was looking for, I do appreciate you taking your time to help.

It screams for improving section crvs quality.

Have you tried the “Super sweep” plug-in? It’s free and awesome. Keep in mind that it only supports a single profile. It does not need to be exactly on the curve, because the plug-in is smart enough to relocate it on the rail relative to the point you pick.

It features a dynamic preview, as well as the ability to trim either end in a numerous ways while the rail output is still in a preview.

Can you provide instructions on how to install this plugin for Rhino 8?

I’m running into the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.

It’s pretty straightforward, just like any typical exe file for Rhino:

  1. Download the ZIP file from Food4Rhino;
  2. Unpack it;
  3. Double-click on the exe file;
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation;
  5. Open Rhino;
  6. Drag the RHP file into Rhino’s viewport (it will inform you that there is a new command called ! _Super_Sweep);
  7. (Optional) Edit the “Sweep 1 rail” or the “Sweep 2 rails” icon and add the new ! _Super_Sweep to the RMB.

I am certain that I have tried all the instructions here and in the original location of the file. My computer has user restrictions, and as I am not an administrator, I think the exe file cannot be run. A second possibility is that my version is Rhino V8. I will try again another PC

Thank you for your help!

yes… file sweepform.exe not run

Perhaps the Rhino developers could help with some opinion on the matter. From what I heard in the past, Rhino 8 should support the scripts and plug-ins made for Rhino 7, however, there’s always a chance for some incompatibility.
