PC - Build Configuration

Hello all,

I would like to have some suggestions on a PC configuration: monitor (ultrawide 49” or three flats 4K?) and keyboard included (at the moment I’m working on a laptop).
My budget is 4000$ or slightly more.
I live in Italy.
The PC will be a working machine for 3D modelling (Rhinoceros and Grasshopper for industrial - product - automotive design, eventually other CAD software), rendering and video rendering (Blender).

Thank you!

While my interest in what’s the best CPU or GPU for $X is little–just spend as much as you can–I’ll offer that a 49" ultrawide is really for gaming. They’re two 27" monitors in one, if I was buying two monitors for work I’d want bigger than 27". Productivity likes TALLER displays. My main monitor was a 30" 2560X1600 for many years, then it died and I got a 38" 3840X1600, and frankly I was a bit disappointed, I’m glad I got it used. If I replaced my 2nd monitor with another 38", I would stack them vertically, that might be cool.

Hi Aaron, you should look at the ultrawide 49 with the kind of content that helps you judge its quality and decide if the pixel density and quality is good enough for you. I’ve seen people who love them and some that can’t stand them.

I would rather have a good single 4K 27” or 28” display than any of these large but not that good options.

I run a triple 4K setup and it’s super nice but it does require a beefy video card. And the monitors alone are close to your total budget, I got lucky that I found an online seller that sold me 3 of the fanciest 27” Dells for under $1k! Then the video cad to run them will be expensive too, like a 3080 or 3090.

I hope that helps.

Depends on your workflow , I recommend a couple of 4K monitors or at least one large 42in -48in 16:9 display.

Also avoid OLED since it has shortcomings when it comes to productivity. (Color fringing and OLED burn ins)

Thank you all for your replies,

Probably I need to reconsider the aspect ratio first and I guess something more “proportioned” is better. In any case I prefer the idea of a single monitor, I don’t like the idea of the bezels in the middle of my screens and the image distortion caused by two or three flats.
For any kind of information outside the 3D canvas I can always use my laptop as a second monitor.

@gustojunk
Since you’ve mentioned the 3080 and the 3090, it seems like they’ve been overtaken by the 4070 and the AMD RX7900XTX, but the older ones are still more expensive. Do you know if there’s a reason for that?

Thanks.

Overtaken how?

I’d never consider a GPU not made by Nvidia. I do not know what they make, but it probably still sucks for Rhino, Blender, and cannot even be used for Octane.

BTW, I meant 3080 Ti, not 3080, since the 3080 Ti has same performance as 3080 if you work on smaller scenes and can live with the low RAM (12GB instead of 24GB).

Here I buy our cards from local crypto boys who now are going back to work and need to sell their money-losing rigs. This is what I can get today in my town if I need another card:

Best,

Gustavo

Hello,
I also meant the Ti.
The 4070Ti is cheaper and some benchmarks that I’ve seen suggest me they’re comparable, even if the architecture and all the specs are different. Please tell me if you have a different view / suggestions / experience on that. That is why I’m here asking for help
Nothing against buying used components, but for this setup I must get only new parts.

Got it. I think you need to look at what makes more sense in your local market. There are so many variables these days in prices for GPUs.

Here in US I started buying used GPUs when that was all you could get (pandemics, chip shortage, crypto hype), and the GPUs so far have all worked great. I think we bout about 6-8 3090s/3080TIs tris want and they have all been great.

I agree, too much choice that are slowing down my (urgent) needs.
Anyway, I’ll take a look in some local non-virtual shops also. Sometimes it’s worth it.

Thank you.
