Outline / Boundary around 2d linework

I have a very detailed 2d line work drawing, basically technical drawings of some machinery. What would the approach be to basically shrink wrap the outter boundary of the objects with a closed curve?

The drawing is so detailed it is just killing performance in Cad and Revit and I need to create a simplified LOD of the object.

Depending on your cases, this method might work:

Get outline (region) of points
