Ornamental/organic/vine-like patterns in Grasshopper

Hi all,

I’m exploring the possibilities of using Grasshopper to create ornamental designs similar to the one attached here (Balinese-style floral carving). I understand how to approach the central floral motif but I’m struggling with the surrounding vine structures and how they can be built up within a defined boundary.

Are there design principles, plugins or workflows in Grasshopper that can be used for ornamental/vine-like structures? Or is this kind of work generally more efficient when drawn manually in Rhino and perhaps only parametrized partially?

This design is highly symmetrical and mirrored — which makes it all the more interesting to attempt parametrically. Ideally, I’d like to avoid mirroring and instead generate more organically growing variations using rules or randomness.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Parakeet: Parakeet | Food4Rhino or Monoceros: Monoceros | Food4Rhino could be of some help. A lot of other plug-ins can be useful depending on your interest. You can search on food4rhino (mathematics or games)
