New Craft: Design after Design
April 2 – September 12, 2016
Fabbrica del Vapore, Milano (Italy)

We are pleased to announce the New Craft: Design after Design Exhibition at the XXI Triennale di Milano 2016. The interactive installation allows exhibition visitors to design their own custom wood stool to be fabricated by Riva 1920. In this way, the public interfaces with an industrial company and their processes to fabricate their products and materials.

Technically, the installation is comprised of a physical Arduino interface with knobs, sliders, and buttons, which communicates to Rhino / Grasshopper through Firefly. The Grasshopper definition reads the state of the physical interface elements and modifies, in real-time, the model of the stool. When the user is finished, they push a button to save a 3D file and a screenshot. This file is then fabricated at scale on a Roland MDX40A milling machine.

The installation was directed by Fabio D’Agnano in collaboration with Riva 1920, Master in Digital Architecture IUAV, Master in Digital Exhibit IUAV, Roland DG Europe, Fab Lab Venice, Enaip Cantu, and McNeel Europe.

The exhibition runs from April 2 – September 12, 2016 at the Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan.
