My New Rhino Machine Specs

Also i am considering this model, which one would you choose?

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Hi SGL,
You might get better deal if you build the computer by yourself or let your local retailer build it for you. What type of work do you do? Design? Architecture? Urbanism? My opinion on components:

  • 16 GB RAM is the minimum
  • Graphic card: Rather buy GeForce 1060 or 1050 Ti or better.
  • Consider adding SSD disk for the system and applications, at least 250 GB.
  • Processor is good, if you want to save money and don’t render much, you could think about going as low as Intel i5-7600.
  • You can save money on Microsoft Office and go for LibreOffice.

Cheers, I’m sure we can think of something more suitable than these two Dell systems.

Depends on the render sw, but ones that use Cuda, you should get GTX1060or above. Much difference in
productivity especially when using one machine.
16GB and 256GB SSD seems minimum specs. As for CPU, I’d open another thread for any user feedback…

This is a great reference, Josh. Just finishing up the installation of new tires, forged wheels and some LED light bar on the current Jeep project and I’ll start my pc build.

Here is another great Rhino Machine (Rhino 600): http://www.glazierscenter.com/Machines/rhino-machine/

Hi Gil,

How does your GTX machine compare to your work machine with quadro? Which has overall better rendering performance?

Thanks,
AC

SGL-

ONLY comment I can offer here is GOOD Processor choice, so for FASTEST PERFORMANCE, set your 7200 RPM H.D. as the SECOND drive for STORAGE and get a 500Gb PCIE-SDD as your BOOT/System Drive, AND your working project(s) .

Adds cost for the SSD, but the performance will make YOUR system equal to or FASTER than a 5.0Ghz processor based system having only a conventional 7200-RPM H.D. IF you’re forced to either/or on this, DROP the 7200 1TB and do the SSD. Use an EXTERNAL drive (preferably USB-3) for archival storage. This can be purchased later as your budget permits. FORGET storage bragging rights. I have an internal 1TB 7200 and only move things off MY SSD as the project gets closed out. I haven’t gotten ANYWHERE NEAR capacity on my SSD, so SPACE isn’t likely to be a problem.

The 500Gb SSD will have PLENTY of CAPACITY and dropping the conventional 1TB H.D. cost will make the SSD based system come closer to your initial budget target. LATER adding an external USB-3 1Tb H.D. can work your budget to your personal best advantage.

However, IF you can do it, get the Internal 1Tb 7200 RPM H.D. too.

Otherwise, I’d ALSO look at adding a multi-button mouse and a 2-button 3DConnexion “Space Navigator” 3D Puck-Mouse. I use the Microsoft Intellimouse with its 2 EXTRA Programmable buttons, along with the 2 buttons on the “Space Navigator” for my most frequently used functions, and can swap profiles based on which CAD Program I’m using [RHINO. AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor, 3DStudio, Bongo (Excellent RHINO Animation Plugin)], etc. Also, the Space Navigator comes in a wireless version so you can go wireless Keyboard, CAD Mouse and Navigator ! I don’t, but its an ABSOLUTELY reasonable approach !

Your video card looks reasonably mid-range, and SHOULD serve you well. It SHOULD give you EXCELLENT results with RH-5 (INCLUDING the FREE NEON Plugin which I HIGHLY recommend) . The anticipated RH-6 will run VERY WELL and will give you GORGEOUS RESULTS on your card with the ONLY possible exception the anticipated REPLACEMENT for NEON: “Raytraced”, which gives such marginal results that an EXPENSIVE Card upgrade will be required to get results approaching what you got with your original mid-range card and the FREE NEON Plugin.

All in all, I’d say your plan is ROCK SOLID and should give you EXCELLENT results with RHINO for the foreseeable future !

Ok, I hope this helps, and GOOD LUCK !

C.
