Layer text not showing

I am helping a new colleague setup Rhino and get involved in some projects. Initially everything was working OK and he later showed me that his layer tree was not showing any text assigned to layers. When a layer is clicked, the text shows up semi-transparent, but this still makes it difficult to turn on/off correct layers and is slowing him down mightily.

just an idea, did somebody mess with the UI colors? not sure how far that is possible on windows though.

UI color for Window Text somehow got switched to White - thank you for the suggestion! I was not even aware that window text color could be changed.
