Knit 4.0

Digital knitting curves can create variable flexibility, even in rigid materials. The structure can be programmed with varying loops to adjust its performance.


Tube sample on half scale mannequin. Loop structure created a flexible, adjusting sleeve from rigid material.


Using the uv grid of a 3d model to generate knitting curves along its surface. When these curves are piped a knitted structure is created which can be 3D printed.


Knitting samples printed with a Nylon SLS printer and scanned using a document scanner.


Shock absorbing honeycomb structure hidden in the sole.

The final object is a single material 3D printed shoe in SLS TPU that combines different programmable material strucutres: Varying knit structures provide the required support to the foot, and the negative stiffness honeycomb structure creates an elastic sole

This project was a second semester project in 2019 for the Bachelor of Arts in Fashion & Technology at the University of Art and Design, Linz, Austria.
