Hey Sciensman, as I mentioned before I am not a jeweller but I think (I may be wrong) prongs are made longer so the stone setter can bend, trim, and shape them securely around the stone before final polishing. This ensures a strong hold and a smooth finish.

Yes, this is the concept and likewise could apply to other elements / aspects of the jewelry design as well. Or perhaps somewhat counterintuitively, an element is left out or a ā€œplaceholderā€ element is used until final choices are made. The commonality is that it is often adventurous to leave some ā€œdegrees of freedomā€ in the model.

That makes a lot of sense! Leaving some ā€˜degrees of freedom’ in the model gives flexibility for adjustments during the making process. I guess it’s a balance between precision in modeling and adaptability in craftsmanship. Thanks for the insight!
