Another question please. Why is it sometimes I can and other times I cannot “explode” an object? Is explode and ungroup basically the same? Like, when I import a polyhedron from the polyhedron plug in, I need to explode it to see all the parts.

Hi - no, joining and grouping are not basically the same. They have the same result in that you can select several objects together but that’s where the similarity ends. You can group objects that are very far apart but can only join objects that generally are of the same type and that are within tolerance of each other. During the joining operations, edges or endpoints that are within tolerance will be forced together and thus change (within the tolerance that you set) the geometry. Grouping will not do that.

Thank you. I have tried to duplicate the example you gave me about creating the two polyhedron from the plug in. In your example the details sections says your objects are poly-surface, but my imports from the plug in say my objects are surfaces. I cannot “explode” my objects.

Why is mine different? What type of surface can always be exploded?

Hi - it looks like you will get a group of surfaces instead of one closed poly-surface if you set Colorize=Yes. Set it to No and you will get a closed poly-surface.

Reading and working through level 1 training guide. It is in fact a very good start.

As this plug-in doesn’t have any documentation, basically, yes, just by trial and error.

You need to pay attention to the command line though. That will give some clues.

When you expect to have one single object and you click on it and the command line reads “20 surfaces added to selection”, you know you have selected a group. But, of course, you still don’t know that any of the options in the command to create these objects have an option to create a poly-surface.

Another clue is that you can’t have different display color on different faces of the same poly-surface, so when you see a command option to “Colorize”, you know it won’t be a single poly-surface.

But I wouldn’t say that the behavior of this plug-in is typical for Rhino commands.
