Looks like your paneling does not necessarily have to ‘follow’ the structure underneath - such is the case in the example you show where the panels are more like ‘scales’ of smaller size. To avoid a more cumbersome approach maybe consider Pufferfish as it has a Net On Surface component that could expedite your process given your starting shape is a surface that can work there.
