QUICK REVIEW OF FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA) PROGRAMS
All these programs calculate stress and strain of complex mechanical parts. Simple programs can do linear analysis only, so they cannot explain how the part fails. Sophisticated programs can also do nonlinear analysis, vibration, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and even automotive crashworthiness.
Abaqus is the best FEA program despite its primitive user interface. The cheapest version costs $65,000. (Now you know how much you have to pay for cheap software!) Its reviews are here: https://www.g2.com/products/abaqus/reviews
Ansys Mechanical program is almost as good as the Abaqus. It has better user interface and is less expensive ($29,000). Its reviews are here: https://www.g2.com/products/ansys-mechanical/reviews
SimScale and OnScale are cloud-based programs.
SimScale is popular because it has free version which can do nonlinear analysis and fluid dynamics. Its reviews are here: https://www.g2.com/products/simscale/reviews
Wikipedia article about SimScale is here: SimScale - Wikipedia
OnScale is new program. It can do nonlinear analysis and thermodynamics, but cannot do fluid dynamics. It is more expensive than SimScale.
COMSOL is very old program. It can do nonlinear analysis. Its reviews are here: https://www.g2.com/products/comsol-multiphysics-formerly-femlab/reviews
Scan-and-Solve is linear Rhino plugin. It should be free, but its price is $1,995.
