I have an old, old FormZ model I would like to import to Rhino. Can anyone suggest any tools for this job, or even a commercial service?
not a formz user.
there is an old similar topic that was unsuccessful / unsolved.
A trail version of formz might help. But I am not sure if the trail allows save / export.
Or ask at the Form Z Forum ? https://forums.formz.com
You may also define what part (of Information / Data) of the old File you need (Geometrie as Mesh / Nurbs / SubD, Colors Materials, Layer or other Meta / Document Data).
This will define the Formz export format. (and maybe some conversion in Formz before exporting).
Have a closer look at .stp (step - can support Nurbs), .stl (polygon / mesh only) , .obj
good luck - kind rergards - tom
Looks like a trial of FormZ Pro is available if the request form is filled out.
However, it is unclear if the trial allows exporting.
Hi @rfritz
I seem to remember installing the free version and actually being able to export via stl and obj, so as long as meshes are OK, you should be good to go. We have a bunch of (really old) Form-Z files lying on an old external HD. I had to translate/redraw a few, when the parts were to go back into production - and the manufacturer had thrown the original work drawings out years ago.

If I recall correctly, FormZ did not have NURBS until version 3, so if the files are really old, saving as a mesh might be the only option.
If the curves or NURBS are needed, the only way to get those might be through using the trial, or if someone has access to an old FormZ version. I have version 4.2, but I haven’t installed it in over 15 years. I don’t know if the dongle still works.
Thanks, everyone. I was really hoping I could just send the file to a service bureau and get it converted, even to meshes, but so far this doesn’t seem to be an option.
I tried installing my old FormZ 4.2.
The dongle driver does not work with the current Windows.
Probably would need to go back to Windows 7 or 8.
Would the free version work to convert your file?
Perhaps not convert—the export formats are limited—but at least I can open the file. I’ll have to keep experimenting. Thank you for suggesting that!
